An Introduction to Eastland
As with many nearby towns, the small city of Eastland saw a lot of growth in the 1920s thanks to the petroleum business. Between 1910 and 1920, the population of Eastland quadrupled.
The city still gets attention for a legend revolving around the old courthouse, built in 1897. At that time, a horned toad named “Old Rip” was shut into a cornerstone of the building along with other time capsule items. The lizard spent over 30 years shut away there, and the legend says that when the capsule was opened in 1928, the lizard was still alive and well.
Today’s courthouse, built in 1928, honors the area’s legend with a glass-front casket containing the famous lizard which finally perished later.
Things to Do in Eastland
Eastland is home to many historic buildings, and the Eastland Historic Preservation takes special care to preserve these structures from the past so that we can enjoy them in the future. Some of the older buildings in Eastland make a point to shed light on the area’s history.
This is the case with the Eastland County Jailhouse Museum. This law enforcement museum is located within the Eastland County Jail, which was built in 1897. The location is known for jailing on of the Santa Claus Bank Robbers in the 1920s, and for being the site of the last public lynching in the state.
If you’re looking for an outing that’s a little more family oriented, the Park Hill Park and Water Park is a fun choice. The waterpark has lots of fun structures perfect for playing and cooling down on a hot summer day. Picnic tables provide a shady place for lunch.
Speaking of lunch, residents and visitors alike love stopping at Meghann's Market to stock up on fresh produce and flowers. In addition to fresh fruits and veggies, this local spot has tasty canned goods, gardening and landscaping supplies, and outdoor furniture for sale.
